This coffee comes from smallholder farmers contributing to the Kariaini Factory in Kirinyaga County, Kenya. The Kariaini Factory is part of the Mwirua Farmers Cooperative Society which borders Mt. Kenya National Park. Kenya’s coffee is dominated by a cooperative system of coffee production, where members vote on representation, marketing, and milling, as well as profit allocation. Smallholder farmer members grow coffee in volcanic loam soil (coffee loves this!) in the famed Kirinyaga region which is known for producing some of Kenya’s best coffees. The Kariaini Factory ferments coffee for 18-48 hours depending on ambient conditions. After fermentation, coffee is washed and then dried on raised beds.
