A new coffee from the DR Congo

A new coffee from the DR Congo! Bright, fruity and velvety. We love this new offering from the South Kivu region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Our new Mukwinja DR Congo boasts a number of complex fruit and floral notes including orange, candied pineapple, juniper, and ginger. We called it big, intense, and candy sweet. A must-try for lovers of interesting, fruit-foward coffees with a zesty kick!

About. This lot comes from the Mukwinja washing station in South Kivu, one of 8 such stations opened by Virunga Coffee Company in 2012 to produce specialty coffees in eastern DRC and improve the livelihoods for smallholder farmers in the region. Mukwinja works with 699 farmers in South Kivu, who cultivate at altitudes between 1,500 and 2,500 meters. Despite the high potential of the coffees around Mukwinja, smallholder production is characterized by a very small farm size, lack of infrastructure for coffee processing and lack of access to high-quality markets. Virunga Coffee is working to improve this by offering technical assistance to coffee farmers on regenerative agriculture practices, as well as access to coffee inputs, namely high-quality coffee seedlings to increase farming productivity, and thus profitability.

Learn more about JBC, five time Good Food Award winners and named one of the best coffee roasters in the nation by Forbes and Gear Patrol with over 340 90 plus rated coffees at the Coffee Review. The Chicago Tribune called JBC one of Wisconsin’s standout roasters and the Daily Meal said our espresso will elevate your mornings. We are focused on quality-driven, sustainable coffees.

Unparalleled quality, a human story, and sustainability – that’s our coffee philosophy.

Unparalleled quality. We won’t buy a coffee unless we know that it will inspire you.
A human story. Often times a producer’s story gets lost in the coffee supply chain. It’s our focus to provide a seed to cup experience, honoring everyone involved.
Sustainability. We purchase sustainable coffees directly from producers and through brokers who share our goal of making coffee a sustainable commodity. Financially and environmentally, the coffees we purchase seek balance.
