New Sumatra Coffee! Kerinci Sumatra

Wet hulled Sumatra

Introducing our new Kerinci Sumatra! This coffee hails from approximately 280 smallholder farmers in the Kerinci community located in the Jambi Province of Sumatra. True to Sumatra fashion, this coffee is ultra thick and sryupy (if you like a big, big body this is the coffee for you). But unlike many Sumatran coffees that can be overwhelmed by earth and tobacco notes, this wet-hulled offering boasts clean, complex fruit notes and lots of sweet spice.  It’s a beautiful balance of body, fruit, and spice with a pleasant complication of green sweet veggie notes akin to cucumber mint tea or sweet pea. Aroma and tasting notes include pink grapefruit, blackberry, cucumber, cinnamon graham cracker, cardamom, plum, sweet pea and purple grape. If you are a lover of big bodied, complex and sweetly spicy Sumatra coffees (but also love a clean, fruit-forward coffee), this is the one for you. Enjoy!

Farm Level Info. The farmers growing this coffee highly value sustainability and continuously work to preserve protected forests in the Kerinci community. All coffees are shade-grown with other crops including potatoes, carrots, cabbage, chilis, ginger, and spices. This natural canopy protects the coffee trees, slows down cherry maturation (a key to producing more fruit forward, expressive coffees), and preserves local biodiversity. Smallholder farmers collect ripe cherry and the coffee is then partially processed at the farm level before it is delivered to the Sungai Lintang mill for final processing. This coffee is wet hulled, a processing technique unique to Sumatra/Indonesia, where they remove the last protective layer of the coffee seed-the parchment-before the coffee seed is dried thoroughly. The result of this unique processing style is spicy and big bodied coffees. Often the result is also earth and tobacco notes but we pride ourselves on taking the time and due diligence to hunt out super clean, fruit-forward Sumatras that highlight the best of this unique coffee-growing region while leaving behind the characteristics we would avoid. This coffee showcases all that we love about the Sumatran profile and then some. Enjoy.

Unparalleled quality, a human story, and sustainability – that’s our coffee philosophy.

  • Unparalleled quality. We won’t buy a coffee unless we know that it will inspire you.
  • A human story. Often times a producer’s story gets lost in the coffee supply chain. It’s our focus to provide a seed to cup experience, honoring everyone involved.
  • Sustainability. We purchase sustainable coffees directly from producers and through brokers who share our goal of making coffee a sustainable commodity. Financially and environmentally, the coffees we purchase seek balance.
