Farm Level Info. Over 1,000 smallholder farmers living on the Embu-Kirinyaga border contribute ripe coffee cherry to the Kathakwa Factory, part of the long‑standing Kibugu Farmers Cooperative Society. Situated on the southern slopes of Mount Kenya at 1,500–1,700 meters, this coffee factory consistently delivers clean, structured Kenyan profiles with excellent physical preparation and grading reliability. Ripe cherry is delivered daily and processed using Kenya’s traditional disc depulpers, followed by a 24‑hour wet fermentation and a clean water soak that ensures thorough mucilage removal and clarity in the cup. The coffee is then dried on raised beds for 1–2 weeks before it is carefully conditioned on site for moisture stability. Supported by Kibugu FCS’s agronomic training and pre‑harvest financing, farmers are provided consistent support in the quest of producing exceptional coffee.

Peaberry Explained. A peaberry is when only one small round bean forms inside a coffee cherry rather than the usual two flat sided beans. Peaberries are often separated out from regular beans to sell as a distinct grade of coffee because of their elevated and unique cup profile.

Unparalleled quality, a human story, and sustainability – that’s our coffee philosophy.

  • Unparalleled quality. We won’t buy a coffee unless we know that it will inspire you.
  • A human story. Often times a producer’s story gets lost in the coffee supply chain. It’s our focus to provide a seed to cup experience, honoring everyone involved.
  • Sustainability. We purchase sustainable coffees directly from producers and through brokers who share our goal of making coffee a sustainable commodity. Financially and environmentally, the coffees we purchase seek balance.
