Iwannitosa Putra is the owner of Putra Gayo, a mill and farm in Aceh, Sumatra. Iwannitosa specializes in both washed and natural coffees, as opposed to the common Sumatran processing method of wet hulling the coffee. This means that we get all the lovely fruit and spice notes that are common to Sumatra, while foregoing the overwhelming earth and mustiness that can be present in a wet hulled offering. This particular lot is resplendent in notes of concord grape, raspberry jelly, cardamom, milk chocolate, and star fruit. It’s big bodied, plush, and everything we love about a fruity and spicy Sumatra coffee.
This microlot coffee comes from the Putra Gayo farm and smallholder farmers. Aceh, in northern Sumatra, is known as an incredible region for coffee production. The average farm is one hectare and 80% of smallholder producers are women. Most smallholder farmers grow their coffee amongst many shade trees including lamtoro, banana, orange, avocado, and jackfruit trees. Intercropping like this not only benefits the coffee quality but also the environment. Ripe coffee cherries are delivered to the Putra Gayo Mill where they are then pulped, fermented for 10-12 hours, and dried for about 10 days.
