This coffee comes from smallholder farmers who are part of the Murue Farmer’s Cooperative Society and who contribute their ripe coffee cherry to the Ngurueri Coffee Factory. Situated in Embu County on the slopes of Mt. Kenya and the Aberdare ranges, the Ngurueri Factory features picturesque views of Mount Kenya National Park. Farmers here benefit from red volcanic soil that provides all the essential minerals to produce amazing coffees. Couple this with cool temperatures and you have an ideal growing environment for some of the world’s best coffees. At the factory, meticulous cherry sorting and generous quality incentives ensure that only ripe cherries are processed. Coffee cherry is first depulped, then fermented, then washed, and finally dried on raised beds. Ngurueri works extensively with farmers to provide sustainability and Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) training. The cooperative likewise provides monetary assistance for school and farm improvements, as well as providing additional training meant to promote quality-forward and sustainable practices on the farm level.
