An award-winning coffee from an award-winning producer: Domingo Torres Geisha. This elegant coffee just won a top spot at the Land of Diversity Coffee Competition among thousands of Colombia’s top coffee lots (no small fete in a country pushing out some of the world’s most amazing coffees as of late.) Our Domingo Torres Geisha is a classic representation of what makes the Geisha variety so special. It’s crisp and silky with tasting notes of jasmine, mimosa, white grape, and pomegranate. While at once classically Geisha-esque, it also, uniquely, continues to build and build as it cools for a transforming coffee experience. We highly suggest you add this to your must-try list!
Land of Diversity. Our founder and 30-year coffee veteran Michael Johnson headed to Colombia in October for the country’s renowned Land of Diversity Coffee Competition. The best Colombian coffee producers send their best coffees to this competition and among the Land of Diversity winning coffees was a definite standout that caught Michael’s attention: Our Domingo Torres Geisha. Domingo Torres took Colombia by storm last year when he garnered the highest ever price paid for a Colombian coffee during the Land of Diversity auction at over $120.50 per pound. He continues to push out amazing coffees like this special lot from his farm El Roble.
About the Producer. Domingo Torres has quite the story to tell. Not only is he a Tsunami survivor (washing ashore and surviving a Tsunmai that caught him and his fishing partner by surprise after a 7.9 magnitude earthquake in Cuaca, Colombia), he also is risk taker. After working odd jobs in Venezuela and Colombia, Domingo eventually landed a mining job that allowed him to save enough money to buy a plot of land in Colombia. With no previous farming experience, Domingo and his family transformed their land into a coffee farm. What Domingo lacked in experience he made up for in will and determination. After several years of coffee growing and many learning curves, he bucked local tradition/advice by swapping out disease resistant coffee varieties with more finicky and fragile, yet higher quality, varieties like Geisha/Gesha. Thus, began his journey into specialty coffee.
About the Variety. The Geisha/Gesha variety is a coveted coffee variety originating in the Gori Gesha Forest of Ethiopia that is known for producing a highly floral and sweet cup of coffee. It’s also known for garnering record-breaking price points, the latest top scoring Panama Geisha/Gesha earning $10,013 per kg (or $4541.83 per pound) for green coffee. It’s stunning and unique cup profile, coupled with its high selling price point and exclusivity, make this variety one of the most prestigious in the world.
